The Review:
On a beautiful Sunday morning I journeyed to another fine establishment on Eat Street, The Copper Hen. Apparently it’s the place to be and you need reservations? Yes, reservations for BRUNCH (so if you go consider this unless you want to wait). Thankfully my friends had us covered with a 1:15 time, which resulted in a few people showing up a bit hangry (for the rookies this means angry hunger, something you want to avoid and avoid those with it at all costs) and ready to eat.
It was a nice quaint little place that was super hipstery with raw brick walls, rot iron chairs, and wood top butcher block tables. There was an awesome bakery with all sorts of muffins, cupcakes and cinnamon rolls on display. Naturally in our hangry state we were placed directly across from the smorgasbord of pastries.
Since this establishment only had a beer and wine license their Bloody Mary was made with sake. I’d never had a Sake Bloody Mary before but I was certainly open to it. I proceeded to order this non-typical Bloody and when it arrived I couldn’t wait to dig in. The glass was of course a mason jar and atop of a wooden skewer was a mini muffin with frosting and a single blueberry on top. There was also a celery stick but I was too focused on the eloquently put together mini cupcake to care about some lame veggie. However, I pulled myself together and took some advice and set aside the cupcake in hopes I could save it for dessert. The first sip was refreshing and had a good dose of tomato juice. I couldn’t taste any of the sake but also felt there could have been more flavors. I could tell the mix was fresh and was most likely made from scratch. However it had a bit too much tomato juice in it with not a lot of spices, herbs or additional sauces. It was a nice and light Bloody, which paired well with the sake. I definitely wasn’t having a difficult time sipping it down before my food arrived.
After holding out and finishing the Bloody I was able to unwrap the mini cupcake and dig in. I wouldn’t have called it a cupcake as it had more of a scone like texture and taste. Once I bit in and had a moment to comprehend all I can say is WOW! A delicious blend of sweet cake and savory bacon. Yes, there were indeed mini bacon chunks within the cupcake. Oh and the frosting! Damn, pardon my French, but the cream cheese frosting was out of this world and truly was the icing on the cake (pardon the pun)! It was so good I had to buy another one to take home for my Monday morning breakfast. So the Bloody and Skewer wasn’t too shabby but let’s not forget to mention the beer chaser. I think this every time and finally a place did it, they had a non-light beer chaser! It was a Lift Bridge Farm Girl Saison, which is a wheat beer that has a nice smooth taste and just a little sweet that paired well with the Bloody. I was impressed that they stepped up their game with a premium chaser.
Overall I’d give the Copper Hen’s Bloody a 3 out of 5 pickles rating. This was strongly weighted by the overall presentation with the mini cupcake, mason jar and premium beer chaser. The Bloody itself was fairly bland and tomatoey but despite its light in flavor, I still enjoyed it.
Since the cupcake was amazing you’d think the food would also be good, right? Well indeed it was! I had a B.E.L.T. or bacon, egg, lettuce and tomato sandwich with their smashed potato fries and a side of aioli. It was fantastic. The bacon was thick cut smokey and cooked just right. The egg was cooked to perfection and the yoke was runny so when I took the first bite it broke and marinated the entire sandwich. The potatoes were a bit bland but had some more tang when paired with the garlic aioli. It was a great brunch and I’d give the food a high recommendation for anyone who wants a great Sunday or Saturday brunch.
Overall, a great brunch at a cool unique restaurant. I would strongly recommend the food and would give a nod at the Bloody Mary mostly for the mini cupcake.
